Blue Crabs

On May 30th I went out to the Oso Bay Turnaround to help collect Blue Crabs and Brown Shrimp.  It was quite the experience.  I am not a water person, so this was the first time I had been in a body of water that wasn’t the beach or the pool.  As soon as I walked in, I immediately got stuck in the mud and fell.  I was soaked the rest of the day.

I felt so out of place, but I knew I had to learn quickly what was expected of me.  I eventually caught on, and I was weeding out the crabs and shrimp from the rest of the sea life and trash we collected in the net.

After we were done with the net, we learned how to fish for crabs using rulers, fishing line, and chicken.  This activity was so much fun.  I’ve always been a person who didn’t like to fish, but after giving this a try, I loved it!  It took a whole lot of patience, but once I actually caught a crab, it was so gratifying.  I really felt like I accomplished something, and I really felt like I was contributing to the project.
